Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

People

They're really fascinating, aren't they? The way everyone's mind works differently. How different people can see the same event, but experience it is drastically different ways, have widely different emotions. It all just . . . fascinates me.

Scott and I were watching MTV while I was buring replacement CDs last night, and there was a string of programs entitled "I Want a Famous Face." It's a show about ordinary (That's debateable) people who get plastic surgery to resemble celebrities. It's MTV's new reality show thingy. And, well, despite finding the entire premise of the show distasteful and pathetic, I watched it anyway. Why? Probably just morbid curiousity and watching these people justify rearranging their features to look like someone famous. While the surgery did, in fact, result in a remarkable resemblance to the star of choice, In every single case, I can honestly say that these people were more attractive BEFORE the procedure.

First there was a guy who wanted to look like Elvis. My god, I've never seen a bigger baby. This very muscular young man merely laid in bed, and RANG A BELL for his friends to come wait on him. Looks like the star thing was already going to his head . . . And as a result of the surgery, he was able to pose for PlayGirl . . . which baffles me . . .

The second was by far the most interesting because . . . it was really sad. It was a transgendered guy, who wanted to look like J-Lo. Now, even though I don't understand transgendered people in the slightest, I try to reserve judgement on them. And then there is this poor guy (who really was HOT as a guy) wanting surgery to look like Jennifer Lopez. Wait, not Jennifer Lopez . . . J-Lo. That name is what really gets under my skin. Who the hell came up with "J-Lo"? Are they too lazy to pronounce her full name? The shortening of her name is the epitome of pathatic pop culture to me, and here is this poor kid referring to his favorite celebrity by some media concocted name. It was so sad to see something so pathetic. And then this guy . . . girl . . . whatever, had a boyfriend, who seemed really sweet and understanding. The Jennifer Lopez Wannabe (I REFUSE to use the term J-Lo unless absolutely neccesarry) dumped him after her surgery because he/she felt he/she wasn't getting the attention he/she deserved. And then, after the surgery, he/she got a modeling contract . . . I just . . . wow . . . some people are really out there . . .

And the third was some girl who wanted to look like pamela anderson, so she got boobs that dwarfed her head . . . yeah . . . She already had posed for Playboy, and Playboy told her not to get the implants, but she did anyway. Well, after much debate Playboy ended up keeping her. And then when her issues came out, the girl starts bawling saying her pictures are bad and she looks nowhere near as good as the other girls. She even calls up the playboy office to complain . . . The shallowness literally made my head hurt through the tv. Then there were all the clips of this girl saying how she wanted to "be somebody" and "make a difference". By posing nude? By being known for your tits? How!?

All these people who's life goals are to be known for having attractive bodies are just so alien to me. I mean, everyone wants to look good, but most people would rather be remembered for something other than their physical features. It's so depressing knowing people like this are really out there, making decisions, living! Just . . . HOW!?

And then there are people like Dan Feuerbach who have the most amazing minds. (Read his blog. I have it linked on the right at the bottom. Pure genius.) People that could care less about the rest of the world and are content to be themselves. And Alan, I could listen to him ramble all day long. Even if it doesn't make any sense, it's just . . . interesting. I love to hear his opinions on things because they're so well thought out and logical. Yay for logic! There's Scott, who soooo obviously has more going on in his mind than he is willing to let out. I can see the thoughts spinning in his eyes. There's Kori, who's emotions flow so freely, they saturate the people around her. Katrina, who has just as much, if not more going on underneath the surface as Scott does.

I'm very greatful that there are just as many truly good people as those superficial shallow ones. And I'm grateful that I can count the good people as my friends. I don't know what it is, but I've just been reminded lately of how truly individual and unique and fascinating people are. Maybe it was Dan's Alex article. Regardless, I feel like I have a new appreciation of individuality, and a need to get to know and understand everyone around me even more.

Although, I should probably actually do that Lit paper first . . . Yeah, that might be good . . .

Oh, and as a side note, don't feel left out if I didn't mention you specifically in the above. It's just late, I'm tired, and still have a lot to do, so I just mentioned the first ones that came to mind. I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!!
