Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

Halloween!

Wow . . . what a weekend. I just got back from seeing probably the most intense, horrifying movie I've ever seen: Saw. This movie is just so good on soooooo many levels. It's a VERY intelligent movie. This movie was just as psychological intense the second time around, even knowing all of the plot twists. THAT is how good this movie is. One of the reasons it works so well, is that it forces the audience to actually put themselves in the shoes of the characters and imagine what they would feel if they were in the same situation.

Sooooooooo creepy . . .

So yeah, I definitely have a new favorite horror movie. And if that doesn't win an oscar for . . . something, I will be pissed as hell.

I also saw Jekyll and Hyde at Millard North this weekend, and I thought it was pretty good. Leaps and bounds over their Into the Woods production last year. My sister was really quite good. I watched both casts, and her double threw the part away whereas Corie actually did stuff with it. But yeah, very, very good show.

I was actually only going to see one cast, but on Friday, Ryan begged me to come Saturday, despite not being able to make it till around 8. Well of course I caved in because Ryan is gay, and has apperantly worshipped me since he was a freshman at Millard North. And you all know I'll do anything to please a gay boy . . .

God, let's not get on that subject . . .

Speaking of God . . . Chorale had to sing at 3 services this weekend, and the gospel was talking about how Jesus said that everyone who committed sins was a slave to sin. And that slaves have to place in the master's house. But the Son has a permanent place in the master's house. Thus, Jesus would set us free from being slaves of sin, so that we could have a place in the House . . .

Ok, so if we are slaves to sin . . . then Sin is the Master . . . therefore, we do not have a place in Sin's House . . . But Jesus will set us free from sin, so that we can have a permanent place in Sin's House . . .?

That sounds kinda . . . not right . . . to me. Maybe its just a really horrible analogy.

But its in the bible . . .

Just goes to show you that the bible isn't perfect either.

And along the same lines, something else during these services occured. Ok, so I totally don't want to be blasphemous. I just want to understand better. I really do. This just . . . doesn't make sense to me. Ok, here goes:

Ok, so Jesus died for our sins, right? God sacrificed his only son to save the rest of humanity and allow them to enter heaven, correct? Myrv's sermon talked about how that was the ultimate sacrifice and that no one could ever give more than God has already given us . . .

But then he went on to talk about how Jesus was ressurrected and ascended to heaven three days later . . . So, this ultimate sacrifice by God was to allow Jesus to die, spend 3 days in hell, and then bring him back to life and let him enter heaven?

Does anyone else see why I'm confused? Is it really a sacrifice when God just took him back after a few days? Well, Jesus suffered, right? Being crucified was a horrible way to die, right? Well, just last week we talked about crucifiction, and all the grisly details. What happened is that Jesus was crucified on a Friday, and they could not crucify people on the Sabath (Saturday), so they had to make sure he died before Saturday. So, without going on and on with technical details, they made it so Jesus died significantly faster than most people who are crucified.

So Jesus was conveniently excused from a GREAT deal of suffering.

But he descended into Hell, right? Wasn't that horrible? It probably was. I'm not claiming to know how horrible Hell is, or to say its not that bad. I'd imagine it'd be more horrible than anything I can imagine.

But Jesus got out after 3 days . . . God brought him back to life. So instead of an eternity of suffering, like most people, Jesus only had three days.

So this all just leads me to question just how GREAT this sacrifice was. Was it really that much of a sacrifice? I honestly don't think so. Hell, I'd volunteer to die semi-horribly, and spend three days in hell if I would be brought back to life and assured an eternity in heaven in a couple days. Not to mention, being worshipped by millions of people.

Jesus got a pretty sweet deal out of the whole thing.

If Jesus really was dying for all our sins. If he really was a sacrifice, then why did he get off the hook so . . . easily? If he was to spend eternity in hell, then sure, I could buy the whole "ultimate sacrifice" thing. But that's not the case. Jesus isn't suffering anymore . . . the sacrifice was 4 or so days of his time . . .

Maybe someone could explain this better to me? Because I'm really, really confused.

It just reinforces my idea that Jesus was more a prophet than a martyr; that he didn't have to die for our sins because God doesn't expect us to be perfect. That's what makes sense to me, and this whole "sacrifice" thing merely strengthens it. I'm not going to go into now because it'd take too long. But, yeah, if anyone can explain this so me, I'd be very happy to listen to you.
