Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

Sunday, March 20, 2005

Today JP told me about an automatic recording that called his house to enlist his family's aid in "preserving marriage" or some bullshit like that. The recording gave him a web address. Well, I went to the site, and I found a link to e-mail them to ask questions. I figured they wouldn't put it there if they didn't want responses, so . . . here's what I sent them:

(To massmarriage.com)

I have been looking around your site for an answer, but I can't seem to find one. Maybe you can help me?

I have always been very thankful and proud to be a member of this great country. I remember how throughout all my years of history class, I would learn how America was such a great place because we offered freedom that most other countries didn't offer. In fact, America was first settled by people who left their home country because they felt they were being persecuted. They were being told what they could and could not believe, so they came over here and be free to practice their religion as they wished.

I've always thought there was much wisdom in remembering the past, so as to avoid similar mistakes and conflicts in the future, which is why I am so troubled by recent events.

It seems that, once again, people are persecuting others because they believe differently. A similar situation seems to be happening all over again. Homosexuals are fighting for the right to be legally married to the people they love, and be entitled to all the same benefits that every heterosexual person enjoys when they marry someone they love. Unfortuntately, the homosexuals are denied these rights, and are persecuted by a majority of the population of this country.

I just don't understand why these rights are being denied to them. After all, these are legal rights and priviledges, granted by the government. The government isn't forcing the catholic church and other religious organizations to support homosexuality. A legal union is completely seperate.

Also, I really don't understand how gay people getting married impacts the heterosexuals at all. Allowing them to get civil unions doesn't force any other person in the country do change their beliefs. On the other hand, all the people railing against gay marriage seem to be imposing their own beliefs on others. Why are they so concerned with a subject that has no effect on them? And isn't this forcing of belief structures on others just the thing this country was founded to protect against?

I have been very confused and concerned by recent events, so I thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

Sincerely,
Eric Grant-Leanna
